This Sunday is the day the church refers to as Ascension Sunday (Ascension Day falls on May 29th this year, 10 days before Pentecost). After Easter, the next forty days bring us to the time when Jesus ascended into heaven. Ten days later, the disciples experienced God’s presence on the day of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit descended upon them gathered in Jerusalem.
Next weekend, I have the honor to preside at a wedding in Asheville. As this wedding and the Day of Pentecost come together, I’ve been reflecting on the words of a hymn. “The Gift of Love” by Hal Hopson, is based on Paul’s I Corinthians 13. The third verse of this hymn is like a prayer for God’s Spirit to descend upon us and direct our unity and service as we live into a new day.
Come Spirit come, our hearts control Our spirits long to be made whole Let inward love guide every deed
